Fed: Walsh appointed ALP national secretary

CANBERRA, April 7 AAP - The ALP national secretariat today rubber-stamped former political
journalist Geoff Walsh as its new national secretary.

Mr Walsh's party credentials include stints as adviser to former Labor prime ministers
Bob Hawke and Paul Keating.

He has a background in foreign affairs, and was formerly Australian consul-general to Hong Kong.

Labor party national president Barry Jones said the ALP would rely on Mr Walsh's campaign
skills in the leadup to the next election.

Mr Jones also paid tribute to former national secretary Gary Gray's 14-year contribution
to the national secretariat.

"Gary Gray joined the Labor Party as an idealistic 16-year-old and never wavered in
his commitment to the party's values and ideals," Mr Jones said in a statement.
